Disconnects, Unknown Entities, naked characters, red ?'s and other strange things.

Depending on the type of connection you are using this breakdown in communication can be resolved in a number of different ways.

Why it happens

The Unknown Entity label on NPCs and Players, red question marks in your backpack and toolbar, frequent disconnections from the game and similar issues are caused by a breakdown in the network communication between your computer and the game server. Other symptoms of a communication error include character models not loading, lagging gameplay or exiting to the login screen with a disconnection error a few moments after entering the game.

Resetting your game

Before reading through steps below, please reset your game by running the Repair tool using the Reset and Check files options. This will ensure that the error is not caused by corrupt cache files or addons, please try the game before reinstalling any addons. You can find the Repair tool in the folder where you have the game installed (by default, C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft).

Using wired Ethernet

Please first verify that you have the latest drivers installed for your network controller device.

If you are unsure as to what network controller device you are using, follow these steps to discover the make and model:

  • Click Start
  • Click Control Panel
  • Double-click on the System icon
  • [ If using Windows XP, ensure you are on Classic View first ]
  • Select the Hardware tab
  • Click on Device Manager
  • Expand the Network Adapters section
  • You will find the name of your network controller there

After updating your network controller device drivers, making some adjustments to the device will improve its performance:

  • Locate your network controller device using the steps above
  • Right-click on the device and select Properties
  • Click on the Advanced tab...
  • If you have a Checksum Offload property, set the value to Disable
  • If you have a Hardware Checksumming property, set the value to Disable
  • If you have a Duplex option, set the value to 100 Full Duplex

After clicking Ok to confirm any of the above changes, it will take a moment for your Internet connection to return.

Special notes for specific network controller devices:

~ Nvidia Nforce network controller ~

For Windows XP users, when on the Advanced tab, check for the following additional Properties:

  • Set Checksum Offload to Disable (as above)
  • Set Segmentation Offload to Disable
  • Set Optimise For to Throughput

If you're using Windows Vista, check for the following Properties:

  • Set Checksum Offload IPV4 TCP to Disable
  • Set VLAN and Priority to Disable

~ Netgear FA311 ~

Follow these steps to manually update your device drivers, if you encounter any messages regarding older drivers please choose to install the driver anyway:

  1. Download the latest drivers for your device
  2. Extract the .zip file to your Desktop
  3. Click the Driver tab when on the Properties of your device
  4. Choose to Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)

Using Wired USB

If you're connecting directly to a modem via USB, please first try connecting via ethernet instead. Should the issue persist, or if you are not able to connect via ethernet, ensure that you have the latest drivers for your motherboard (chipset) and USB modem device.

This article has links to some common chipset drivers, however you may need to contact the computer manufacturer directly for assistance in discovering which chipset you are using and where the latest drivers can be downloaded from. Similarly, you should find the newest drivers for your USB modem device on the respective manufacturers website.

USB hubs can also cause connection issues, make sure that your USB modem is connected directly to a USB port on your computer and not via a USB hub.

Using Wireless

If you are able, please try connecting to your router using a wired ethernet connection and seeing if the disconnections continue. If you aren't able to connect with a wire, check the following:

  • Change the channel your wireless connection is using

Try changing the channel (frequency) your wireless connection is currently using. You will need to change the channel via your router, please check your router's manual for information about how to change the channel.

  • Update the drivers for your wireless device

Make sure that you have the latest drivers installed for your wireless device, you can find these available to download at the manufacturers website.

  • Update the firmware for your router

Similar to software driver updates for your wireless device, the manufacturer may have released an update to the firmware for your router. You can find the latest firmware, and instructions on how to install it for your router, at the manufacturers website.

  • Check for interference from other wireless devices

Some wireless devices in your home may be interfering with your wireless connection. Turn off or move any other wireless devices you may have in the vicinity, items such as cordless phones and Bluetooth devices can cause interference.

  • You can find further information on how to improve your wireless connection in the following Microsoft article.

  • If you are using Windows XP, try disabling the Wireless Zero Configuration service.

Configuring your Router

Ensure that you have the latest firmware installed for your router device, you can find this available to download from the device manufacturers website. Forwarding TCP/UDP Port 3724 on your router is also advised.

~ BT Home Hub users ~

If you are using a BT Home Hub, acquiring a new IP address can help resolve this error. To renew your IP address, disconnect the landline from your Hub for a few minutes before reconnecting. Should your IP address remain the same, disconnect the power from the Hub for one hour before reconnecting.

~ AOL users ~

If you are using AOL, try setting your Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) on your router to 1400.
